ABSTRACT

The data on road infrastructure and means of transport in Europe are available in the Eurostat database, in the subsection: European Commission/Eurostat/Transport: road transport infrastructure, road transport equipment – stock of vehicles. The total number of road vehicles strictly depends on the size of the country, in particular on the number of citizens; therefore, it is not a reliable indicator for environmental impact of road transport. The age of vehicles is an important factor influencing pollutant emissions. The Euro emission standards have separate criteria for gasoline and combustion engines. Numerous scientific studies have been carried out to determine the environmental impact of the most popular types of engines, such as diesel, gasoline and liquefied petroleum gases. The condition of the transport infrastructure may significantly contribute to air pollution, especially in urbanized areas. In order to reduce emissions, European countries have introduced the European emission standard.
