ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how gender diversity is more than the binary counting of women and men. It is a complex topic that consists of gender identity, sexuality, societal gendering norms, and more. Although some programs try to determine users’ sexuality or gender identity, this is a dangerous path, as it paves the way for exclusion and bias. Societal pressure on what gender expression and interests are is enormous, and this is the historic data that machines risk reproducing. Queer communities often have a fluidity of gender understanding, smashing sexual and gender binaries. Artificial intelligence such as social media predictions or facial inferring of sexuality can mean a death sentence if used in the wrong hands. As history time and again shows, majority discrimination against vulnerable groups and minorities does happen, and heavily impacts the quality of life of those discriminated against.
