ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how bodies are treated by artificial intelligence (AI) systems, focusing on health, age, and disabilities as three major topics where our bodies move in and with different systems. Healthcare informed by AI has the potential for novel advancements in diagnosis and treatment, but also risks overpromising results. One example of healthcare technology using AI is sensory monitoring. Habitual monitoring and upkeep are, for example, starting to become more widespread in dementia care. Health, is for many, synonymous with physical health, but mental health is also important. The COVID-19 pandemic has globally been the most significant and impactful happening since the World Wars. Care technologies are not only for older adults but also for another major user group, i.e., people with disabilities, regardless of their age. Technologies such as sensory systems for detection hold the potential to increase well-being—not just delay death.
