ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the procedure for job site inspection, gathering information on the fan, motor, and drives and testing the air handling equipment pressures. Before leaving for the site inspection, make a checklist of items needed for the inspection and testing and balancing. Gather all applicable plans and specifications including contract drawings, shop drawings, “as-built” drawings, schematics, automatic temperature control drawings, manufacturers’ catalogs showing fan and terminal box description and capacities, and manufacturers’ data and recommendations on testing fans, boxes, air inlets, and outlets. Prepare report forms for each system being tested. Using the prints and specs complete, as provided, the design or specified information for the air handling unit, fan, motor, and air distribution. Check fan rotation to ensure that the fan is turning in the correct direction. To check rotation momentarily start and stop the fan motor to “bump” the fan just enough to determine the direction of rotation.
