ABSTRACT

The present chapter deals with a very common type of hemivariational inequalities. It closes by giving certain applications of the presented theory to problems from Mechanics and Engineering. Several types of hemivariational inequalities have already been studied with respect to certain engineering problems, e.g. in nonmonotone semipermeability problems, in the theory of multilayered plates, in the theory of composite structures, in the theory of partial debonding of adhesive joints etc. It investigates the relation between the hemivariational inequality and the corresponding substationarity problem. Note that all the problems expressed via hemivariational or variational-hemivariational inequalities are free boundary problems; for instance, in the case of the plate problem considered, the free boundary between the interface points which remain adhesively bonded and which not, is not a priori known.
