ABSTRACT

Searching online information retrieval systems requires the use of computing equipment such as computer terminals and telecommunications connections to the computer. This chapter discusses the selection and preparation of a site for online searching, the types of telecommunications equipment and connections available, the types of terminals available, and the selection and use of the equipment. The distinctions between dumb and smart terminals are not always clear; in some cases, additional options available on a dumb terminal may move it into the range of smart terminals. Printing devices include both printing terminals and separate printers for video display terminals. Computer terminals, printers, and acoustic couplers can be leased on a contract basis or purchased outright. Availability of maintenance is one of the most crucial considerations in selecting equipment. Online searching requires computing equipment that is normally located at a dedicated search site.
