ABSTRACT

Information retrieval systems are powerful tools but their usefulness is limited by the ability of the searcher to operate them. The searcher must be able to communicate with the client to understand his or her information needs fully. This chapter briefly explores some of the individual characteristics that are thought to exemplify the person who can become a good searcher. The profile of a good searcher is presented to aid the prospective searcher in evaluating his or her own characteristics in terms of the skills required, and to aid the manager who must evaluate or hire search analysts. Individuals who become good searchers are well organized and have efficient work habits. The searcher must be willing to learn through experience and to pursue additional training as needed. Most online searching is provided in conjunction with other library reference services. Searching online systems requires a variety of skills and talents.
