ABSTRACT

This chapter supports experiential learning in online searching. Although it is only through actual interaction with an information retrieval system that the dynamic nature of online searching is fully appreciated, the basic steps of the search process can be summarized here. It reviews each step, with examples, in order to acquaint the reader with the dynamics of online searching. The chapter is intended to be used in conjunction with the reference manuals provided by one or more of the three systems. Exercises for online practice are included at the end of the chapter. The chapter covers the steps after the information had been gathered and the search strategy defined. The actual online search begins by connecting the local terminal to a search system through a telecommunications connection. Printing is usually the last step of a search, although the whole process from selecting a database through printing can be repeated indefinitely in an online search.
