ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies various online and hard copy language-related search aids. Several aspects of vocabulary control are examined in this chapter. It is devoted to the definition of some basic terminology and standards for formulating a controlled vocabulary. The online thesaurus, the advantages and shortcomings of natural-language indexing and searching, the effects of vocabulary control on the recall and precision of a search, as well as some basic suggestions on the location and use of supplementary search aids complete this general survey. There are numerous sources which trace the history of vocabulary control and discuss the role of computers in the preparation and use of indexes and thesauri. The common understanding of a given topic is greatly enhanced when its terminology is well-defined. The two most conventional methods for gathering thesaurus terms are the review of sample documents on the subject to be indexed, and referral to subject specialists or established subject authority lists.
