ABSTRACT

In the utilization of the water resources of the world, thereby aiming to ensure providing for the permanent and continuous water demand of modern life, two major trends can be recognized: The effective use of the existing water systems, renewed or upgraded eventually, and The development of new water systems and schemes, usually by means of reservoirs and dams. Most reservoirs in the world, from small to medium to large capacity, are subject to siltation problems to some degree. The major factors affecting the proportion, rate, and nature of sediment deposition in reservoirs are: soil erosion in the catchment, sediment load and transport in the river system, reservoir morphology, and mode of reservoir operation. Controlling reservoir silting means in fact the control of sediment deposition in a reservoir.
