ABSTRACT

A successful fire combat operation in a mine, follows recovery of the sealed off areas—after the fire gets quenched. Rescuing trapped miners from usual hazards of mining like toxicity from fires, inundation, roof falls etc. is one of the principle task of rescue brigade. Inspection of rescue team at the onset of fire and collection of necessary data thereof, with feed back processing from computer—help in planning effective fire combat design. Breathing apparatus are required to be used in fire area to address the problems as regards toxic gases, depleted oxygen atmosphere as well as hot and humid environment with near zero air velocity in sealed zones. Immediately after an incidence of fire or explosion, mining personnel find difficulty for movement underground due to poor visibility from dust and smoke, besides uncomfort from heat and humidity.
