ABSTRACT

There are many lessons to be learned from history in all aspects of human activity. In respect to mineral production, the conclusions that follow may help to crystallise objectives that may be pursued with advantage by both developed and emerging nations. All mineral deposits occurring within the borders of any country represent latent or potential national wealth to that country. They can be transformed into actual national wealth only by being mined. Mineral production has provided the wherewithal for creating a better lifestyle for the individual citizen. If domestic mineral production in terms of present needs begins to languish in the highly industrialised countries, then these people should be prepared to face a progressively worsening situation in the future. Accordingly, mining is an essential requirement for economic growth. Agriculture and mining are the only industries that produce the basic raw materials with which all the other industries fabricate and service man’s industrialised way of life.
