ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a comprehensive review of Schizozygia which is a genus of plant in the family Apocynaceae found in tropical and southern Africa. It presents information on character, habitat, phenotypic charater and distribution of S. coffaeoides. Shrub, repeatedly dichotomously branched, with white latex. Leaves opposite, petiolate; colleters present in 1–2 rows in leaf axils. Inflorescence two together in forks of branches, congested. Corolla salver-shaped, lobes in bud overlapping to the right; stamens included, anthers sessile, introrse, upper two thirds fertile and dehiscent longitudinally; ovary of two free rounded carpels; pistil head with a basal cylindrical part 0.4–0.9 mm long and a bifid stigmoid apex. Seeds surrounded by a thin pulpy red or orange aril; endosperm white, copious; embryo white, spatulate.
