ABSTRACT

A reference manager is a piece of software in which students can store and view all of their papers, make notes on them, and use them to make citations and build bibliographies. Because published papers play such a fundamental role in their reading and comprehension of a subject, and citations are pivotal in chapter or paper writing, putting these elements together in a good reference manager makes a lot of sense. Unsurprisingly, they become something that they may well use a lot during the course of students’ Doctor of Philosophy, and it is worth thinking carefully about which one they want to use. To pick the format the students’ references are going to be stored in carefully. Using a generic referencing format means that they will (in future) be able to change packages with minimum loss. If students’ software stores references as BibTex files, they are always able to take this file and use it elsewhere.
