ABSTRACT

It is hard to emphasise exactly how important students’ reading will be, when it comes to their writing. They should be taking notes on the science, but they should also be using it as an opportunity to learn tips and tricks of writing. However, the critical reading where they make notes on the ones that do stand out will help them greatly when it comes to their own writing. If students have spotted what it is that they like, write it down and commit it to memory. The very fact that they start to see things in other people's writing that they like and admire means that they have managed to start reading critically. The advantage that making notes by hand brings students is that they can deliberately associate the location in which they read, and practice their handwritten notes, with the place where they want to eventually write and recall what they have learned.
