ABSTRACT

In the institution, students need to have their PhD or MSc approved by a group of 3 independent staff members in their department. The department requires that their written proposal is publicly available to everyone in the department at least seven days prior to the oral presentation of their proposal. This is not unique to the university, many institutions require that students formally propose the work that they plan to do in a PhD. The proposal is a collection of documents, where each document is a chapter of the thesis. Writing grant proposals is essentially the same as students’ thesis proposal, and so they can use this document (with some modifications to tailor it to the grant objectives) to raise money for their work. Once they are done with their proposal, they might feel that they have done an awful lot of work without having added anything towards achieving their PhD or MSc.
