ABSTRACT

Very few people can sit down at a desk and write an academic paper from beginning to end. For most of us, it takes a lot of hard work over many weeks or even months to write something that can be submitted for peer review. This chapter argues that not only is writing to a formula good practice, but it's the best way to learn scientific writing. Start by writing a general sentence for the subject of each paragraph. Then use sub-points to plan each sentence within the paragraph. The introduction concentrates the ideas into our particular approach, while the discussion allows the reader to understand how our results fit into the larger body of knowledge.
