ABSTRACT

If we think that tables are just about displaying a series of boring numbers, then it's time to free our mind. Tables are an amazing vehicle to display information that can be numeric, written or pictorial. From the simplest of two by two tables with several levels of organisation, the reason for putting our information in a table is that we can provide it in a simpler and easier way to the reader than if we were to put all the information in full into a paragraph of text. Most journals want tables formatted so that there are only horizontal lines. This makes them easier to print, but it can make following text across a large table difficult. Tables of morphological measurements or meristics were always tricky to put together in word processors until they became better integrated with spreadsheets.
