ABSTRACT

Writing paragraphs has a skill all of its own, this chapter describes the basics of how to put a paragraph together. This paragraph starts with a topic sentence which contains the principle idea that citations are needed for examples. A topic sentence allows the reader to understand quickly the idea/topic students are putting forward in the paragraph. In putting together the paragraph, students can use the magic of threes to break their dialogue into three parts: thesis, antithesis and synthesis. It is time to take a step back and look again at the paragraph in the context of their outline. The paragraph represents a single subject but that it is still just part of the manuscript as a whole and students need that to flow from beginning to end. Just as in the other instructions on formulaic paper writing, when writing a paragraph, students should not feel totally constrained so that they cannot break the rules.
