ABSTRACT
This chapter presents various introductory aspects of applied safety. It covers need for safety and engineering safety goals; safety application areas; safety facts and figures; terms and definitions; useful sources for obtaining information on safety; scope of the book; problems; and references.
In the case of useful sources for obtaining information on safety, the chapter lists 14 books, 19 journals, 9 standards, 15 organizations, and 8 data information sources. Also, the chapter presents ten problems to test the reader’s comprehension in the area.
Finally, it is added that the sources of most of the material presented in the chapter are given in its reference section. This will be useful to readers if they desire to delve more deeply into a specific topic or area.
