ABSTRACT

This chapter presents various aspects of truck and bus safety. It covers top truck and bus safety-related issues; truck safety-associated facts and figures; most commonly cited truck safety-associated problems, factors associated with heavy-vehicle accidents, and safety culture in the trucking industrial sector; safety-associated truck inspection tips, safety-associated tips for truck drivers, and recommendations for improving truck safety; bus and coach occupant fatalities and serious injuries; transit bus safety and key design-associated safety feature areas; vehicle safety data sources; motor vehicle traffic-associated accidents in selective countries; problems; and references.

The vehicle safety data sources covered are Federal Highway Administration, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and insurance industry.

The chapter contains ten problems at the end of the chapter to test the reader’s comprehension in the area. Finally, it is added that the sources of most of the material presented in the chapter are given in its reference section. This will be useful to readers if they desire to delve more deeply into a specific topic or area of interest.
