ABSTRACT

This chapter presents various important aspects of robot safety. It covers robot safety-related problems and hazards, robot manufacturers’ and users’ roles in robot safety, safety-related considerations in robot design, installation, programming, and operation and maintenance phases, robot safety-related problems causing weak points in planning, design, and operation, common robot safety-related features and their functions, robot safeguard approaches, robot welding operation-associated safety considerations, problems, and references.

The robot safeguard approaches are physical barriers, flashing lights, warning signs, and intelligent systems. The robot welding operations-associated considerations are hazards and safety measures for robotized resistance welding, robotized laser welding hazards and safety measures, and hazards and safety measures for robotized gas-shielded arc welding.

The chapter contains ten problems at the end of the chapter to test the reader’s comprehension in the area. Finally, it is added that the sources of most of the material presented in the chapter are given in its reference section. They will be useful to readers if they desire to delve more deeply into a specific area of interest.
