ABSTRACT

This chapter presents various aspects of safety in nuclear power plants. It covers safety objectives of nuclear power plants, nuclear power plant fundamental safety principles, nuclear power plant-specific safety-related principles, safety management in nuclear power plant design, deterministic safety analysis for nuclear power plants, safety-associated requirements in specific nuclear plant systems’ design, nuclear power plant safety-associated standards and documents, problems, and references.

The nuclear power plant fundamental safety principles covered are general technical principles, management principles, and defence in-depth principles. Similarly, the nuclear power plant-specific safety-related principles covered are emergency preparedness, accident management, siting, design, manufacturing and construction, commissioning, operation, and decommissioning.

The chapter contains ten problems at the end of the chapter to test the reader’s comprehension in the area. Finally, it is added that the sources of most of the material presented in the chapter are given in its reference section. They will be useful to readers if they desire to delve more deeply into a specific area of interest.
