ABSTRACT

This chapter presents various aspects of airline and ship safety. It covers United States airline-associated fatalities and accident rate, aircraft accidents during flight phases and causes of airplane crashes, air safety-regulatory bodies and their responsibilities, aviation recording and reporting systems, worldwide airline accident analysis, noteworthy marine accidents, ship port-associated hazards, global maritime distress safety system, ship safety assessment, problems, and references.

The air safety-regulatory bodies and their responsibilities covered are the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) responsibilities and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) responsibilities. The aviation recording and reporting systems covered are accident/incident reporting system, accident incident data system (AIDS), aviation safety analysis system, aviation safety reporting system, ICAO ADREP system, and air transportation oversight system (ATOS). The noteworthy marine accidents covered are the Prestige accident, the Estonia accident, the Herald of free enterprise accident, and the Derbyshire accident.

The chapter contains ten problems at the end of the chapter to test the reader’s comprehension in the area. Finally, it is added that the sources of most of the material presented in the chapter are given in its reference section. They will be useful to readers if they desire to delve more deeply into a specific area of interest.
