ABSTRACT

This chapter presents various aspects of rail safety. It covers causes of railway-associated accidents and incidents and examples of the causes of specific rail accidents, general categories of rail accidents by causes and effects, rail derailment accidents and incidents and their causes, telescoping-associated railway accidents, railway accidents in selective countries, light rail transit system safety-associated issues, railroad tank car safety, methods for performing rail safety analysis, problems, and references. The railway accidents in selective countries include accidents in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

At appropriate places, the chapter contains examples along with their solutions, and there are ten problems at the end of the chapter to test the reader’s comprehension in the area. Finally, it is added that the sources of most of the material presented in the chapter are given in its reference section. They will be useful to readers if they desire to delve more deeply into a specific topic.
