ABSTRACT

Ensuring that target users are included in the design lifecycle essential for effective human factors design, this chapter adopts a user-centered focus group method and presents design output for automated vehicle (AV) interaction design. The chapter presents what learner, intermediate, and advanced drivers require and suggest for raising situation awareness (SA) prior to the handover of control, as well as how transfers of control should be physically performed. Drivers discussed solutions and generated schematics illustrating what, and how, information should be communicated at each stage of the handover process. The chapter summarizes these schematics and provides insights into how AV interaction design can cater to users' needs while ensuring that system safety is addressed. Additionally, this study discusses varying requirements for varying driving skill levels in human-automation interaction.
