ABSTRACT

Bridging the gap between concepts and working prototypes can be a challenge. This chapter presents the method and output from a design workshop where human factors experts were tasked with converging human-communication research, previous findings on human-automation interaction, and user suggestions from previous workshops. The workshop utilized the design with intent toolkit—101 cards providing concepts that should be addressed for effective user design. As an outcome, this workshop provides design suggestions and an example human-automation interaction prototype for implementation in automated vehicles (AVs). The prototype focuses on implementing vocal and visual communication while communicating essential information such as system state, capability, and directions.
