ABSTRACT

The systems in which automated vehicles (AVs) reside are complex and multifaceted. This chapter is concerned with discussing the levels of automation, the vulnerabilities that level 3 and 4 AVs introduce, and the situations in which the AV domain may find itself in. The chapter explores the aspects of interface design in AV interfaces that have been explored previously and introduces two theory bases that the authors deem as being crucial for guiding the design process in this domain: effective communication and distributed situation awareness (DSA). These theoretical constructs are discussed in this chapter with relation to human-automation interaction, and implications are presented.
