ABSTRACT

Expanding on the previously touched-upon ways in which independent animation has embraced mixed-media approaches, here we look at practitioners such as Don Hertzfeldt (Wisdom Teeth, It’s Such a Beautiful Day, World of Tomorrow) and Daniel Greaves (Flatworld, Mr. Plastimime) who are known for combining filmmaking techniques in a variety of appealing ways, such as evoking mood, increasing tactility and introducing metaphysical concepts as regards the interplay between character and environment. Duality explores two further case studies from Chris Shepherd – Dad’s Dead and The Ringer – that both incorporate mixed-media elements in their own disparate ways to increase the audience’s sense of immersion, unease and suspense. Splintering Off elaborates further on the late Rosto’s body of work and his personal development process throughout the progression of his work, culminating in his Thee Wreckers Tetralogy – No Place Like Home, Lonely Bones, Spintertime and Reruns – that all combine a wide variety of filmmaking approaches to bring its live-action and animation components together.
