ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the essentials of FEM electromagnetic analysis with exemplifications for various stages of the process (to be applied in subsequent chapters on PMSMs and IMs): vectorial fields, coordinate systems, line and surface integrals of a vectorial field, differential operations, integral identities, differential identities, electromagnetic fields––electrostatic fields, fields of current densities, magnetic fields, electromagnetic fields––Maxwell equations, visualization of fields, various boundary conditions, Kelvin Transform, Finite Element Method, variational (Rayleigh-Ritz) method, stages in FEM application, 2D-FEM, analysis with FEM (electromagnetic forces: Lorenz force, Maxwell tensor method, virtual work method).

Loss computation by FEM (iron losses) is all treated from simple to complex to facilitate “deep” but “fast” learning using also representative sample results in FEMM 4.2.
