ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces thermal FEA of electrical machines, using the free software FEMM4.2 (as done for electromagnetics in previous chapters), via a case-study simulation results and interpretation, via a Matlab Program available online.

It includes single-body thermal model, two-body thermal model, equivalent thermal network of electric machines, 2D thermal FEA of electric machines—via a spokePM rotor synchronous motor case study—in terms of description, extracting, and interpretation of features of paramount interest (boundary conditions, sample input data File, steady-state thermal analysis, transient thermal analysis for both turn-on and turn-off operation modes, with representative graphic and tabled results from the dedicated Computer Program available online (from the 8+11 batch of user-friendly Matlab Computer Programs File that compliments the book’s two volumes).
