ABSTRACT

This core chapter on PM optimal electromagnetic design with case studies and two user-friendly computer codes (available online) exemplified in the text, treats: the design theme, electric and magnetic loading, choosing a few dimensioning factors, a few technological constraints, choosing magnetic materials, extended analytical dimensioning sequence, weights of active materials, simplified thermal verification by constraint, machine characteristics, optimal design, objective function, SPMSM optimal design by Hooke–Jeeves and Genetic algorithms case study (both methods lead to similar results but Hooke–Jeeves method is less computation time intensive, even after 20 runs from random starting points).

A low computation time new embedded-FEM optimal design methodology of a spoke PMSM is finally introduced (with a new, dedicated, computer code available online) to minimize FEM runs.
