ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 is about the fundamentals of image segmentation and its goals, as well as the types of segmentation. A brief introduction to the segmentation types is provided before going in depth. Segmentation algorithms based on the thresholding method as well as the various types of thresholding methods, and how to find the optimal global threshold are detailed. Discussion of segmentation algorithms based on multiple thresholds is then provided followed by histogram- and region-based methods. The region-growing technique is introduced, and region split-and-merge techniques are then provided with appropriate examples for each. Information about segmentation based on morphological transforms is also provided by addressing the dilation and erosion process with apt numerical examples. The chapter concludes with discussion questions along with their answers and also provides suggestions for supplementary reading. Video links are also provided for in-depth understanding.
