ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the fundamentals of communication technologies and presents the standards for information exchange, the medium of communication systems and wired and wireless communication systems. Smart metering, advanced metering infrastructure and substation automation are explained. Cyber security and attacks and countermeasures against smart grids are also discussed. The architectures of communication technologies for supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems and smart grids are presented. Multi-agent systems, specifications of agents, functional applications in smart grids and implementation are also presented.
