ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the kind of clothing in use at the time of Christ and in the Byzantine Empire. It refers to the clothes of Jesus Christ shown on coins, mosaics, icons and ivories of the Byzantine age, coming to formulate new hypotheses on the influence of the Shroud on these clothes. The chapter discusses the development of ancient depictions of Jesus Christ at the light of the discovery of the Shroud. It is important to have a look at the clothing used in the Byzantine period because it will help the reader understand the meaning of the image of Christ. The paludamentum of the Roman republican age is the solemn uniform worn by the general on the battlefield or in public ceremonies. The chapter explores some hypotheses regarding the recognition of the dress depicted by the Byzantine artists in order to represent Him.
