ABSTRACT

The Byzantine coins are treated following two avenues in order to reach a more objective result. The first one regards the shape of the face of Christ on the coin measured by the so-called nose-to-eye ratio; the second one treats the comparison of the alloys of the Byzantine coins with the composition of some metal particles found on the Shroud. Scientific analysis suggests the measurements of several features of the human face, some of which are not so easy to identify on the face of Jesus Christ on the Shroud. Some particles of electrum confirmed the probable presence of the Relic at Constantinople during the period in which the Byzantine coins in question were minted. The study on the composition of gold alloys also raised the possibility that some Byzantine coins depicting Christ had been rubbed on the Shroud to obtain Third-Class Relics.
