ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the aesthetic opinion of an artist and quantitatively the hypothesis that the Shroud image could have been copied from the face of Christ visible on Byzantine coins. The idea of the author to collect the photos of Byzantine gold coins that represent Christ is a unique opportunity to deepen the Christological Iconography that for the last two millennia is part of our life immersed in art. The similarity of the face of Christ to that of the Shroud is accentuated due to a mirror effect, show a swelling on the left side of the face resulting from the beatings suffered by Christ that on the Shroud show on the right cheek. The results of experiments performed by the author, in which copies were made of an original image, confirm that the Shroud was source image used to produce the face of Christ on Byzantine coins, and not vice versa, as wrongly supposed by some.
