ABSTRACT

This chapter lays the foundation for all the subsequent chapters. It starts with definiing various terms in spatial analysis. Next, this chapter explores the uniqueness and significance of spatial analysis and modelling, in particular its ability to predict the future, and to explore alternatives. After a brief overview of the history of spatial analysis and development, the chapter concentrates on the relationship between spatial analysis and other pertinent disciplines. A solid background in these disciplines will enhance the comprehension of this book, and open up new areas to which spatial analysis and modelling can be applied. This discussion is followed by an in-depth examination of the elements and targets of spatial analysis and modelling. Finally, this chapter compares and contrasts several types of spatial analysis s. It finishes with an overview and assessment of the principal computing systems or platforms that have facilitated and fostered spatial analysis and modelling.
