ABSTRACT

6G aims to achieve the telecommunications convergence that sees the fusion of various types of networks including satellite systems that could enable access to communication services for mobile users in developing areas, emergency areas, planes, trains, ships, etc. However, it is obvious that to be able to achieve the strict Quality of Service requirements of various types of services and applications as well as to enable global coverage, the integration of space, terrestrial and airborne networks is mandatory. This chapter introduces the reader to the vision of the future aerial communications and the integration with the terrestrial network. The satellite basics and several applications of satellites are described. Additionally, practical use-case scenarios are introduced to investigate the coverage area offered by a geostationary satellites in a rural and urban scenario using Altair WinProp software.
