ABSTRACT

The design goals for WLAN were to enable global and seamless operation with low power for prolonged battery use, without any special permissions or licenses needed to deploy and use the wireless network, enable a robust transmission technology, with simple management and easy to use by everyone, with advanced security, privacy and safety as well as to enable transparency concerning applications and higher layer protocols. This chapter presents the evolution of the wireless technologies as part of the IEEE 802.11 family of standards, including mobile ad-hoc networks, vehicular networks and millimetre wave multi gigabit wireless networks. Furthermore, the chapter introduces the vision of three frameworks that bring together various technologies in different areas. Additionally, a practical use-case scenario is introduced to investigate the network planning and coverage area offered by WLAN in an indoor scenario of a multi floor building using Altair WinProp software.
