ABSTRACT

A satellite is a station in space which serves many purposes. The “communication” satellites, receive signals from earth, amplify and return back the same to earth. A satellite is basically a repeater (amplifier) station. The long distance signals cannot reach to the users, unless they are amplified at regular intervals. A satellite as already pointed out is an “off surface” earth repeater station. The function to be performed by a satellite varies from type to type, but almost all satellites have the capability to receive a signal, process and transmit it again. A communication satellite carries microwave receiving and transmitting equipment in order to relay signals from one point to the other point on the earth. Satellites are placed above Ionosphere , therefore, microwave frequencies must be used to penetrate the ionosphere. The ‘polar’ orbits are not used because majority of the world population would then remain uncovered, similarly “Inclined” orbits are also not popular for the same reason.
