ABSTRACT

The Fiber optic communication is the science of transmitting data, voice and images by the passage of light through thin, transparent fibres. The basic medium of fibre optics is a hair-thin fibre that is sometimes made of plastic, but more often of glass. The propagation in optical cables is similar to that in the waveguides. Multimode propagation is also possible. Reflection in case of wave guides is obtained through the walls which are made of conducting materials whereas in optical cables, reflection is obtained through total internal reflection. Rapid progress has been made in the past two decades in both: lowering attenuation in fibre and increasing the wavelength that it can handle. The fibre is the core material used for making optical cables. The plastic fibres may consist of glass core with plastic sheath or plastic core with plastic sheath or plastic core with glass sheath.
