ABSTRACT

The different forms of amplitude modulation are Double sideband with full carrier, Double sideband with suppressed carrier, and Single sideband (SSB) techniques. This chapter discusses SSB. The carrier conveys no information as it remains constant in amplitude and frequency irrespective of the signal. The SSB modulation is the fastest spreading form of analog modulation. The greatest advantage is its ability to transmit signals by using a very narrow band width, very low power for the distances involved. The AM system, in which only one sideband is transmitted is the most popular system. In SSB-SC, power is saved by eliminating the carrier component. The balanced modulator suppresses the carrier.
