ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the use of artificial intelligence technologies for the management of scientific literature and evidence. This includes the processing of huge volumes of textual information to identify relevant publications, to extract information from publications, to synthesize information from several publications together, and to provide an evolving and up-to-date overview of a field of study. The chapter also touches on the use of natural language processing techniques in scientific investigations of textual sources of other types, such as the increasingly widespread use of social media as a source to understand and predict the behaviour of humans. And it discusses the frontier of automated understanding of scientific literature, which involves being able to appropriately parse and understand how the different elements of a scientific text relate to each other.
