ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a summative overview of design representation, and its historic context within design practices (Section 2.1). The chapter discusses how media of expression may implicate the representation and communication of design intentions (Section 2.1.1). We then position design representation within the paradigm of a reflective-practice, as means to scaffold a discussion of its role and use in support of design cognition (Section 2.2). Following sections further examine relationships between design representation and reflective design practice through a discussion of representational ambiguity and fidelity. Design representation’s role and use in a phased process model of design development are discussed (Section 2.3). Design representation is finally examined in terms of appositional reasoning between design problems and their solutions (Section 2.4), with the final section providing a working definition of design representation.
