ABSTRACT

The chapter continues a discussion of design representation’s relationship to design thinking. We further explore the purpose of design representation; considered in terms of different types of design representation. Types of design representation are discussed in their relationship to thinking towards design ideas (Section 3.1). Communication between stakeholders during the design process, and how media of expression may implicate representation, design thinking and communication. We further discuss existing work towards understanding the role and use of sketching as design representation compared to CAD (Computer-Aided Design) tools. Section 3.3 reviews existing work to explore how media of design representation implicates communication of design intent and so the development of design ideas during practice. Various 2D and 3D media, as tools of design representation, are finally discussed in relation to their application in practice as means to represent design intent at various levels of detail and fidelity.
