ABSTRACT
The Tottenham Court Fair, held near the site of present-day Warren Street underground station, included such attractions as bear-baiting, bull-baiting and women boxers. The area bounded by Gower Street to the east and Great Portland Street to the west became known as North Soho. Initially, it was a fashionable residential area, but later in the 19th century the wealthy started moving west to Mayfair and Belgravia. The Middlesex Hospital attracted the Central London Sick Asylum, Arthur Stanley Institute for Rheumatology, part of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, and four urology hospitals. The transformation of nursing and, as a result, the salvation of hospitals was led by religious sisterhoods in the second half of the 19th century, the most famous being St John’s House based in Fitzrovia. Cross Charlotte Street, go through Percy Passage, cross Rathbone Street and through Newman Passage continuing until people reach Newman Street.
