ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 illustrates the Self-Determination Theory, a macro-theory of human motivation derived by multiple disciplines and studies, from the goal theory to the cognitive evaluation theory. To cover as much information as possible about the SDT, only the relevant aspects of other theories are explained in the chapter, blended in the explanation of the SDT itself.

The chapter distinguishes between the different types of motivation, their uses and consequences, a distinction that is very important to other game design theories and frameworks. Then it takes a look at the other three main pillars behind this theory, and how a modern designer should always take them into account when designing with the SDT for a successful use of the framework.
