ABSTRACT

Chapter 10 gets into the human mind by covering two psychological techniques that work as the base for most modern games, focusing on keeping the player in the game loop and driving them toward the desired goal. Such theories are used both to create a new habit, and to correct an already existing one that does not follow the intended behaviour; this is done by assigning to each game element a different psychological meaning that influences how the player feels during the habit, composing their mental model by teaching them which actions should and shouldn’t be performed.
