ABSTRACT

Chapter 14 covers a branch of game design focused on the player’s behaviour, the understanding of their actions, the reason they were performed, as well as how to guide them toward the designed experience in a non-intrusive way. The chapter presents four tools that help the designer see the real reason behind any of the player’s choices, possible design issues, and potential emergent actions that weren’t or couldn’t be predicted.

The chapter is divided into two parts, one covering the diagnosis tools used to understand, and one covering the design tools used to improve. Both parts are of course necessary for a mindful design process, with nothing left to chance.
